3. KEYBOARDING

Little ones: Lesson 3

Technology Goal – Keyboarding

·      Locate and use letters, numbers, and special keys on a keyboard.
·      Review vocabulary from last week:

Room setup
Computers on, but monitors are turned off.  Browser opened and set to Literacy Center's letters keyboarding activity & blank MS Word document. 2 chairs are placed at each computer workstation. Green sticker on left click button and red sticker placed on right click button on each mouse. Had everyone face me first in circle (like storytime) until lesson was over, then turned to computers (see 3, below). Each class has a handout with supplemental links and tips to try at home.

Today’s Vocabulary:
·       Keyboard
·       Direction
·       Button/Key
·       Enter
·       Space bar
·       Close out

1.     Intro
a.    Review last week’s vocabulary
b.    Minimize, Maximize, Close out – act it out, look like a flat line by lying down on the floor. Then open arms and hand WIDE and imagine you are filling up a great big box!  Close Out, make a big X with your arms. When it is time to close out, you will look for the big X in the program (application).
2.     Activity 1 – The Alphabet
a.    The keyboard won’t make sense to the kids unless they understand what the alphabet is. Read Chicka Chicka Boom Boomby Bill Martin Jr. then we sang the alphabet song.
3.     Activity 2 – Paper Keyboard
a.    Each child got an 11x17 printed computer keyboard (many examples online, attached is one we used)
b.    Each child placed a star sticker on the letters in their name (adults help, do together!)
c.     Each child found the Enter/return key and put a star on it.
d.    Each child found the Space Bar and put a start on it.
e.    Used a cutout arrow to demonstrate direction – facing up, go up. Facing down, go down etc. Then kids located arrows on paper keyboard.
4.     Activity 3 – Computer Time
a.    Little Clickers may now go to the computer and press the Power Button to turn the Monitor ON. Play Letters activity finding letters of your name on the real keyboard now.
b.    Play game for about 5 minutes.
c.     DING! Egg timer signals time is up for playing this game. You can play this game again later, but we are going to do something new now.
5.     Activity 4 – Microsoft Word
a.    Little Clickers, it is time to MINIMIZE or CLOSE OUT this game.  Behind it is a blank Word document.
b.    Find and spell your name using the keys on the keyboard – if finished quickly (some kids know alphabet better than others) you may spell your mom or dad’s names (siblings etc.)
c.     Talk adults through printing what the Little Clickers wrote
6.     Conclusion
a.    Distribute handouts, stickers for the Little Clickers and everyone takes their printouts and keyboards home.
