1. Intro
a. Describe class procedure (we’re going to do some things together, THEN you can play if your grownup says it is okay). The class is not all sitting in front of a computer. Children learn through senses so this is meant to be a 3D class.
b. How many used a computer before? Use it at home? Grownups, how many use it regularly, confident users?
c. Computers like reading – we have to be involved in young child’s experience, don’t assume they know, they learn from you so be good role models.
d. Read Elmo’s World: Computers book (aren't many books that so clearly identify computers and I used as a I talked, not really a straight read)
e. Computer like a person, ask kids to identify body parts (arms, legs, head etc.) now going to identify computer parts.
2. Parts of computer
a. Monitor (Screen) – show laptop screen, point to monitor at stations, monitor allows you to see the picture
b. Mouse – hold up mouse with colored stickers, green means go, red (right click) means stop, like our steering wheels in cars, controls motion, what does a “click” sound like? Listen closely as I click the mouse (in the air).
c. Keyboard – keys allow us to use words with computer, lots of different controls, but will talk about next week in lesson 2
d. Hard Drive (we will refer to as the “computer”) – like our brain or a car engine
e. Printer – (aside to adults, printers allow you to “publish” your child’s work and validates their work, put it on the fridge!)
3. Activity 1 - Power Button
a. When you wake up in the morning what do you do? (let kids answer, breakfast, brush teeth, get dressed etc.), we adults might say something like you are “powering up” for the day, explain and show Power Button on laptop. Turns things on and off.
b. “Okay, Little Clickers may now turn around and find the Power Button on their Monitor and turn it on.”
4. Activity 2 – STORY ONLINE
a. Kids will work with parent to select story and “read it” together.
b. Use International Children's Digital Library - Story: The Three Little Pigs
